Captain's Weekly Report
From Keith Vaughan Williams on 13th October:
Fellow Vets,
Greetings from Crete!
As its maintenance week at the club all this week there was no competition obviously. I understand the tree work between the 11th & 13th has already been completed.
On Monday we played our final friendly of the year at West Malling GC on their undulating Spitfire course. This was the postponed match from earlier in the year when the excessive heat had prevented play. What a contrast in the weather though! Torrential rain delayed the start but although we got very wet between the car park and the first tee, by the time we got underway the rain had more or less stopped. The forecast sunshine finally broke through during our rounds to make an enjoyable outing with the course draining well. We also halved the match, so a good result for our team away from home. I personally secured a much needed 4&3 win with Ian Johnson in our game against their Captain and his partner. This in revenge for my own home defeat by the same margin in July! Our overall tally for the year's 16 friendly matches is 6 wins, 3 halves and 7 losses. At home we won 6, halved 1 and lost 1, Away we lost 6 and halved 2. Not too bad! All match results in detail and players final statistics for the season are available on the club's website in the Friendlies section.
Tomorrow, Friday the 14th, Bernie Deacon will lead the Super Seniors team in the Kent SS Championship Finals at Faversham GC. Support there would be most welcome. Please contact Bernie direct for more information.
Next Tuesday (18th) is the Captain/Pro Challenge in which Malcolm Hurst will stand in for me as I'm away overseas (again!). Its a drawn pairs 4BBB team matchplay format. There will be prizes for nearest the pin on each of the par 3s, nearest the pin in 2 on the 18th & the Longest Fairway Drive on the 17th. A post match ball draw too of course! We had 45 entries (including) the 2 professionals when I last checked, so a few more needed please to make up the total entries to a divisible by 4 figure!
I will be agreeing a revised date for the postponed Vets v Ladies Team Trophy with the Ladies Captain on my return.
On Tuesday 24th, we have the re-arranged Meehan Rosebowl Trophy competition which is played as a pairs stableford. 86 entries to date, so potentially the biggest field of the year so far but still room for 3 more pairs if you fancy a shot at it!
Tuesday November 1st is the Vets November Stableford medal with a good field already booked in but still plenty of room for more.
Clarkies Foursomes is slated for the following Tuesday, the 8th November. Its a drawn pairs stableford format with booking already open.
Four weeks away on Tuesday 15th November is my Captains Choice event which will be a "3 in 1" pairs event. Choose you own partner for an 18 hole pairs stableford competition, with the first 6 holes played as a better ball, the middle 6 holes (7 thru 12) played as a foursomes (i.e. alternate shots with one ball, alternating off the tees, so 3 tee shots each) and the final 6 holes (13 thru 18) played as a pairs scramble (also with 3 tee shots each to be selected). Booking will open shortly. (N.B. I'm taking advice on handicapping but it will be kept simple!)

We will again be having our Awards Night this year in conjunction with the Mens & Ladies sections which will be held on Saturday 19th November. Please attend if you can, partners/guests are welcome too. I've attached a copy of the flyer to this email with all the details. If you are a winner of one (or more!) of the 18 trophies that are played for this year (not medals) and are going to attend, its very important that you let me know too please - an email will suffice. You (and your playing partners if applicable) will be formally presented with your trophy in front of your peers and the club will also provide you with a permanent memento of your success (but you must be there to receive it!).
No competition on the 22nd November but the December Stableford Medal, the last medal of the year, is to be played on Tuesday 29th November and is also open for booking shortly.
Finally . . . our last Vets competition of the year; the Christmas 12 hole Stableford & Lunch will be held on Tuesday 6th December. Your match fee and lunch cost will be taken together when booking. There'll be a raffle too giving me one last chance to raise some money for Prostate Cancer UK.
See you in the club house soon.
Kind Regards
Keith
